Until a fix is available, Toyota says owners should remove the truck bed cover from their pickup

Toyota is recalling 2022–2023 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid pickup trucks with factory tonneau covers that could detach from the vehicle while it is in motion, causing a road hazard for other drivers.

The tonneau covers, which fold into three segments and go over the top of the truck bed, were sold by Toyota and were either installed on the vehicles by dealerships or distributors or purchased by owners as aftermarket equipment. A design issue means that the hardware used to attach the cover may not be sufficient to keep it on the vehicle.

In documents provided to the National Highway Safety Administration, Toyota says it doesn't have a fix for the problem yet, and that owners should have dealerships remove the covers free of charge until a free remedy is available. So far, Toyota says it is aware of six incidents of tonneau covers detaching from vehicles.

Vehicles recalled: 2022–2023 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid pickup trucks with factory tonneau covers (part numbers PT954-34220 and PT954-34221) installed.

The problem: A joint at the front of the cover may be insufficient to keep it attached to the vehicle.

The fix: Toyota says it is still working on a fix for the problem. In the meantime, dealerships will remove the covers, free of charge. Any future remedy will also be free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Toyota will contact owners of affected vehicles by mail starting March 31, 2023. The automaker will send a second letter when a fix is available. Owners may also contact Toyota at 800-331-4331.
